Scottish Nightclub Installs Two-Way Mirrors in Ladies' Room

By Ksenia Sobchak

There is a certain myth around the female bathrooms. Men are mystified by this magical place – women go hand-in-hand to the toilets, they come out looking like goddesses. What exactly goes on in there? The mystery and intrigue is almost too much for some to bear. Do they get naked and pillow fight when nobody is looking?

The truth couldn’t be further from the speculation. We pee in the bathrooms. Just like you. Sometimes, if it has been a heavy night, some girls can be found emptying their stomach contents across the floor. There’s a lot of make-up, boys, and a lot of adjusting and checking skirt lengths. Sometimes we just escape from the crowd for a few minutes. There’s nothing special to see here.

But that hasn’t stopped ludicrous nightclubs opening up across the globe – with one opening up right here on our shores in Scotland – dedicated to finding out the secrets of the women’s room. They’ve installed two-way mirrors in the toilets, allowing women to see their reflection as other clubgoers are able to leer in on them from the other side.

And what’s on the other side of the ladies room mirror? Well, rented booths with plenty of seating, of course.

The Shimmy Club in Glasgow has installed the two-way mirrors and hires out the rooms on either side to the club’s patrons. You are able to book the booths in advance online for groups of up to 12 people and can add in all of your favourite extras which can total up to £800 for a single booth. The club offers no seating to patrons aside from within the booths – so booking in advance is necessary if you plan on spending the night dancing away.

According to the Daily Express, there are no signs alerting women to the presence of a two-way mirror. This has outraged the female club-going community, and has also caused an outcry from women’s organisation and sexual harassment groups. They’ve raised the alarm so that female patrons don’t find themselves unexpectedly spied on, and they’ve also questioned the legality of the set-up.

Despite this, the group behind the Shimmy Club deny that the ladies rooms have been fitted with two-way mirrors. They also confirm that they do not allow men or mixed groups to rent out the booths adjoining the rest rooms. Just in case.

Thanks to the Gawker, we now have a response from the nightclub. “The two-way mirror was created as a bit of fun, an interactive feature which we hoped would act as a talking point.”

“its (sic) clear that those who are negatively commenting on line may not have been lucky enough to get past the door staff yet.” They added. They also commented that they would remove the mirrors “if your feedback (and not that of the media) is that you want the mirror area to change.”
