Necronomicox Guide to Vibrator Materials

By Ksenia Sobchak

Getting the most out of your vibrator means taking time to consider the design, the style, the size, and the intensity of your new toy. In addition to these considerations though, the material used to make it will make a big difference in how it feels, how the vibrations transfer to your body, and even in how it looks. Not all vibrators are created equal, and you’ll have a very different experience with a silicone-coated vibrator than you would with a hard plastic one.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common vibrator materials.

Jelly rubber

A jelly rubber vibrator is a remarkable material that has a little more “bounce” to it, and the material is quite inexpensive. Jelly rubber vibrators are some of the lowest cost toys on the market. They often do contain a small amount of phthalates, and as a result we usually recommend using a condom with these.

Silicone

Silicone is an excellent material for a vibrator. While a silicone-based vibrator is usually more costly, it does have some great advantages. It is able to transmit vibrations exceptionally well, especially when compared to flexible materials. Also, it is a clean material and one of the safest ones. You can clean it easily, and perhaps even more importantly, silicone just feels good to the touch. Silicone also warms easily, so it matches your body temperature. Remember though to sse only water-based lubricants with silicone toys.

Elastomer

Elastomer, like silicone, is free of phthalates. It is very durable and more flexible than some other varieties. However, the texture of elastomer is more porous, and they cannot be easily sterilized as can a silicone model. In addition, because of the porous texture, it is recommended to use a condom on the vibrator if you plan on sharing it.

Silicone/rubber mixes

A silicone/rubber mix may be a good choice depending on its texture and the rubber may provide a good amount of extra flexibly. The mix is in no way equivalent to the quality of a purely silicone model or one with a pure silicone sheath, but it may be what you are after depending on your needs or desires.

Cyberskin

Okay, you don’t want one of the exotic, artistic varieties – you just want a vibrator that looks and feels like a giant penis. You want cyberskin. The material is remarkably lifelike, but some of the cyberskins do have phthalates, so they should be used with a condom if they do. Cyberskin toys are usually less expensive than silicone toys and are often the way to go when a realistic look is what your after.

Hard materials

Hard materials, such as plastic, metal, or acrylic, are smooth and free of phthalates. The hard material may not look or feel realistic, but it does have a key advantage, and that is that hard materials tend to transfer vibrations to your skin a lot better – so you’ll get a lot more bang for your buck.

If you ask which material is best, you’ll get a different answer every time. It’s a very personal decision, and may take a little experimentation before you figure out which one feels best for you. Try a few different varieties, and have fun exploring!
